Hidden away in the Yarra Valley is Punt Road Winery farmers market, operating on the third Sunday of every month. The market originated at Yering Station and has called Punt Road Winery its home for the last two years. The new owners’ vision prioritises ambiance and local band Black Kites keeps everyone in the mood with their easy listening set of cover songs.
And while the kids are entertained with a game of Bocce, parents can line up at Yarra Coffee & Co for a latte or Chai using original blends from the valley itself.
The cold weather didn’t keep people away, with the tables full and the lines long it’s clear to see the market is a fun morning out for all. Stalls sell everything from fresh eggs and homemade honey to wines from Punt Road’s very own cellar.
Yarra Valley Cookies owner Carla began selling her Argentinean cookies just over two months ago. Her passion for cooking brought her to start creating the goodies over Covid. The range of cookies includes her specialty Argentinean cookies.
“They are from my home country and I love baking so I thought ‘why not let others try?’,” she said. The cookies, Alfajores, are made from caramel and coconut.
The rain clouds took over but didn’t stop the influx of people, with the Bread Bagels selling out by lunchtime. The aroma of paella and sausages wafting through the air seems to keep locals pottering around the market.
“The kids were driving me mental so I Googled some markets near us. This is one of the best ones I have been to in ages.”
It’s local visitor Tamika’s first visit to the farmers market.
“The kids were driving me mental so I googled some markets near us,” she said. “This is one of the best ones I have been to in ages.”
Family-run Heathmont Honey has been a stallholder for many years and has an array of honey and homemade lip balms. With flavors like red oak and ginger it’s no surprise people continue to come back for the delicious range. Beekeeper John even photographs his own bees for the labels.
The Farmers Market is a sure win for young and old and is located just thirty minutes from the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Whether you’re after some local produce or a place to take the family and dog, it’s got everything you could want for a perfect Sunday outing.
